Hurricane Season 2012: Harris CapRock is ready. Are you?

A storm is moving across the Gulf of Mexico, and the winds are picking up speed. Much of the coast from Houston to New Orleans is prepared for the worst as the hurricane makes landfall. Your rig might have been evacuated, but how will you know that communications for your critical operations elsewhere will remain unaffected? Harris CapRock is ready to serve its customers in the event of a hurricane or major storm.

Harris CapRock’s primary mission is to deliver highly reliable voice, data and video communication solutions to hard-to-reach remote locations and harsh operating environments. As part of this mission, we take hurricane season and disaster preparedness seriously. Frequent communications with customers is a critical component in Harris CapRock’s emergency plan.

From the moment an official tropical storm or hurricane has been identified by the National Hurricane Center, key information and regular updates are provided to customers through channels such as Harris CapRock’s broadcast telephone voice messaging system, emergency information hotline, website and customer portals. In the event that communications services for your operations in the Gulf are threatened, you’ll be the first to receive continuous, up-to-date news from your communications provider.

While no network can be 100% resistant to weather, natural disasters or manmade occurrences, Harris CapRock’s teleport and infrastructure, customer services and emergency planning position us to quickly respond and restore services when necessary. During Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in the Gulf of Mexico, our Houston, Texas facility was evacuated to address safety concerns. Prior to evacuation all teleport traffic was rapidly re-routed to our facilities in Aberdeen, UK and Macaé, Brazil and subsequently delivered back to Houston via the global MPLS network. All of the pre-planning allowed the teleport to be evacuated safely with no impact to clients’ services. This was possible because of Harris CapRock’s geographically diverse and flexible teleport and terrestrial infrastructure.

NOAA’s 2012 Hurricane Predictions

The official start of the 2012 hurricane season was June 1. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), this year’s hurricane season should be near-normal, with nine to 15 named storms. Of these storms, four to eight could strengthen to hurricanes with winds of 74 mph or higher, with as many as three becoming major hurricanes with winds of 111 mph or higher. Hurricane season ends on November 30.
